CircularCityChallenge: Final project results boost innovation for sustainable development education

In its three years of deeply engaging in circularity and sustainability, the project CircularCityChallenge created an engaging learning experience for students and educators, supporting participants to discover new values, explore their local communities, and contribute to positive change. Inspired by the European Commission’s ‘Green Competencies’, the developed curriculum and policy recommendations instill a foundational understanding of circularity, while conveying skills such as systems and critical thinking, project management and communication.

CircularCityChallenge pilots in 4 countries

Forming the key pillar of the CircularCityChallenge, the consortium organized a Pan-European contest for ideas on circular interventions in students’ local environments. This initiative empowered young people to propose innovative and sustainable solutions that support a circular way of living. In the four consortium partner countries—Spain, Austria, Romania, and the Netherlands—tailored approaches were implemented, including co-creation and promotion workshops. The contest also featured an open international contest to gather valuable contributions from youth across Europe. The CircularCityChallenge digital platform offered engaging resources and inspirational examples to guide young students in exploring their local environment to create a more circular and sustainable community. The resulting ideas from the youth showcased the huge potential for change through simple means and highlighted the unique perspectives of young people, which are often overlooked. Juries evaluated all contributions based on predefined and transparent criteria to ensure a fair outcome. A generous cash prize of €6.000, sponsored by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund, was distributed among the winning teams.

Advancing learning assessment in Education for Sustainable Development

Another key effort and achievement of the project was the CircularCityChallenge learning assessment, designed to weave together various strands of knowledge from environmental science to economics in an interdisciplinary approach. It was introduced across diverse educational landscapes, from secondary schools to vocational programs, and even in informal educational events, ensuring it is robust and versatile. For teachers, the assessment framework included a clear system for assigning points to Intended Learning Outcomes, specific indicators for assessing understanding and application of concepts, and a grading system that translated assessment points into standardized grades. Providing students with meaningful, written feedback on their projects was also a vital part of the assessment strategy. This approach acknowledged and valued the students’ contributions, which is fundamental for their motivation and sense of accomplishment. Moreover, it deepened their understanding of circularity thinking by offering constructive insights that went beyond mere grades.

The CircularCityChallenge curriculum

The target audience is 14 to 19-year-old pupils in any educational format—both formal and non-formal settings. Integrating sustainable development education (SDE) with project-based learning (PBL) in both settings provided a dynamic approach for teaching and applying sustainability concepts. In formal education, this approach can be integrated into subjects like science, geography, and economics, encouraging students to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. The resulting projects often involve hands-on activities such as community gardening, local recycling initiatives, or environmental advocacy campaigns, demonstrating the strength of this experiential, flexible framework that promotes community involvement and allows learners to see the direct impacts of their efforts, enhancing their understanding of and commitment to sustainable practices.

Key results to improve circularity education across Europe

Towards the end of the project, the multifaceted experiences were translated into a practical set of key results, outlining innovative policies for integrating sustainability education into schools. These recommendations were designed for ministries of education, local governments, and schools to foster a sustainable future through education. The policy recommendations recognise the complexity of education policy and the importance of balancing top-down implementation processes with bottom-up approaches that leave room for co-implementation and local adaptation. The implementation process itself can enhance education systems by allowing stakeholders – from students and parents to administration and decision-makers – to participate from the outset in shaping policies, thereby ensuring greater impact when these policies reach schools. By promoting these recommendations, the CircularCityChallenge contributes to a more resilient and informed student body capable of addressing the sustainability challenges of the future.

ALLIES: Pilot and Validation Workshop: A Pioneering Step for Online Safety

The landscape of digital content is rapidly evolving and with it the need for robust mechanisms to ensure safety and compliance by Host Service Providers (HSPs). In response to these emerging challenges, the ALLIES Project has started a significant journey to support micro and small HSPs in achieving compliance with the Terrorist Content Online (TCO) Regulation. The project aims to supply these providers with the necessary tools, education, and support to effectively report and remove online terrorist content.

On May 23rd, a pivotal event of the ALLIES Project took place: the first pilot demonstration of the technical tools and educational platform, which were developed under the ALLIES framework. The event was held in a hybrid format, in person in Nicosia, Cyprus, and online, and brought together participants from various sectors to evaluate and give feedback on the project’s developments. Particular focus was placed on the feedback provided by small and micro HSPs.

A Multifaceted Approach to Online Safety

The event was guided by the ALLIES Project’s comprehensive strategy to support HSPs, focusing on four key approaches:

Learning and Awareness Raising: Enhancing the understanding of new regulations and the importance of compliance among HSPs.
Technical Development and Adaptation: Creating and refining technical tools to aid in the efficient reporting and removal of terrorist content online.
Training and Education: Providing educational resources and training modules tailored to the needs of micro and small HSPs.
Experience Sharing and Reporting Mechanisms: Facilitating the exchange of best practices and experiences among HSPs to foster a collaborative approach to online safety.

The Pilot Demonstration: A Closer Look

Following the outlined key approaches, the pilot demonstration on May 23rd was a critical milestone for the ALLIES Project. Moreover, the event was structured to maximise participant engagement and gather valuable feedback on the tools and platform developed.

Demonstration of ALLIES Technical Tools: The session dedicated to the technical tools was an intensive three-hour segment where technical partners provided a guided tour of the tools’ functionalities. This included detailed explanations and hands-on demonstrations, allowing participants to explore the tools in depth. The interactive nature of the session encouraged participants to ask questions, provide real-time feedback, and even engage in practical exercises to test the tools’ capabilities.
Evaluation through an Online Questionnaire: Following the demonstration, participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire designed to evaluate the effectiveness, usability, and relevance of the ALLIES AI tools. This evaluation process was crucial for gathering data on the tools’ performances and identifying areas for improvement.
Educational Platform Demonstration and Evaluation: The educational platform, another cornerstone of the ALLIES Project, was showcased in a ninety-minute session. This segment included a guided demonstration of the platform’s features, the registration process, and a simultaneous learning session focusing on one of the sub-units of Module 1. Participants then engaged in individual learning sessions, exploring different sub-units tailored to their interests and needs. The session concluded with a fifteen-minute online evaluation, capturing participants’ experiences and feedback on the educational platform.

Engaging the Community & Highlighting Collaborative Efforts

In addition to the technical and educational demonstrations, the event featured an information campaign on the ALLIES Ambassadors’ Programme. This initiative aims to build a network of advocates who can promote the project’s goals, share best practices, and support the broader community of HSPs in their compliance efforts with new regulations.

The event also included an information notice about the CESAGRAM project, funded by the European Union. This project complements the ALLIES initiative by furthering research and development in the field of online safety and compliance, showcasing the collaborative efforts at the EU level to address these critical issues.

A Step Forward in Online Safety

The ALLIES Pilot and Validation Workshop was a landmark event, setting the stage for future developments in the project. By engaging participants in hands-on demonstrations, evaluations, and informational sessions, the event succeeded in validating the tools and platform developed while gathering crucial feedback to refine and tailor these resources to the needs of micro and small HSPs.

The success of this pilot event underscores the importance of collaborative efforts and continuous improvements in the fight against online terrorist content. As the ALLIES Project moves forward, it will continue to build on the insights gained from this workshop, ensuring that its tools and educational resources remain relevant, effective, and user-friendly.

ReIncluGen: On what it means to be a woman. Interviews, focus groups and photography

In the past half year, SYNYO and the respective academic partners have transitioned from desk-based to field research. Two additional CSO partners per country have been attracted to collaborate in the research. First, academic partners conducted research with each CSO who in addition served as contact points to gain access to migrant women who benefit from their services. Thus, research with migrant women on their conceptualizations of gender empowerment has started as well. Lastly, during the second consortium meeting, which the Italian partners hosted in Rovereto, future steps of the project have been discussed.

Our Latest Research Activities

If you have followed up on ReIncluGen, you will know that in the first year the consortium partners successfully refined the qualitative methodology, conducted research on the policies promoting gender equality across the five case studies – Austria, Belgium, Italy, Poland and Spain – and analysed overall attitudes towards gender equality in the respective countries. Thereby, the groundwork has been laid out on which we can now build our own original empirical research. In this regard, SYNYO supported by the other Austrian consortium partner Orient Express, was able to effectively recruit further civil society organisations (CSOs) to gain access to migrant women, the social counsellors and teachers working with these women. The organisations all aim towards empowering women by increasing the women’s German language skills, general as well as country-specific knowledge, and fostering their independence.

Furthermore, the chosen organisations will remain anonymous, in order to safeguard the privacy of the women visiting their activities. The organisations, however, reflect a part of Vienna’s CSO landscape, offering women language courses, information workshops, legal counselling, therapy and simply a safe space. Most of the women visiting one of these organisations are mainly first-generation migrants, coming from Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan or Syria. SYNYO decided to use translators to allow the women to speak in their mother tongue, increase their trust in the project and guarantee an in-depth understanding of the topic on both sides.

From September onwards SYNYO has conducted thorough fieldwork which will continue into the first quarter of 2024:

Three focus group discussions with staff working at the CSOs to better understand the way they conceptualize gender empowerment and inclusion and how this is reflected in their work, what activities they provide and which of these are deemed effective and why.
Three focus group discussions with the women visiting the respective CSOs. We aim to interview approximately six women per discussion.
20 points of observation per CSO to observe how their activities are carried out, how the staff interacts with each other, with the women and how the women interact with each other as well.
30 photo-voice interviews with ten women per CSO. Each photo-voice interview consists of three points in time, the first in which the declaration of consent is discussed as well as the women’s life trajectories and definitions of gender empowerment. The second will provide time for discussing the photos the women took and why they are important to them and the last session will encourage the women to reflect on the whole interview process and photo-taking.

So far, SYNYO has conducted ten full photo-voice interviews and two first-sessions. Three focus group discussions were held, one with the clients of Orient Express and two with the staff of two of our CSO partners. Observations have been ongoing as well, leading up to almost 35 points of contact by the end of the year across all three CSOs. Transcriptions of the interviews and focus group discussions have begun, and will be used to analyse the written data via the program MaxQDA.

Focus points of the analysis are the women’s life trajectories, how their life has changed due to their migration, how they perceive “being a woman” to have influenced their life’s course, their view of the CSO’s work and their understanding of gender empowerment. This content analysis serves as a basis for the country report of each partner country and will then feed into the deliverable of this work package, the comparative report, led by the Spanish university partners. The photos, the women have taken in the course of the interview, will be made public and shared via a travelling and local photo-exhibition as well as a photobook. Each woman was invited to submit at least one photo with a brief quote on what it signifies for her in the context of gender empowerment and generally being a woman.

Further Developments & Future Milestones

From the 27^th to the 29^th of September the 2^nd consortium meeting was held in Rovereto, Italy. The meeting gave the consortium members the possibility to discuss their respective experiences with conducting fieldwork with and within the CSOs, plus how the CSOs perceived the research and what the research could offer the CSOs in return. Here, the development of the digital platform is of major relevance, as it aims to be used by CSOs and is therefore built based on the needs and desires of the respective CSOs.

Another discussion point was the photovoice art exhibition and the photo and essay book. Concrete plans were made for the schedule of the travelling exhibition, the selection process of photos, and the format of the exhibition and the photobook.

iProcureSecurity PCP: Implementation of Phase III – Development and Testing of Pilot Systems

Following the successful completion of Phase II – Prototype Development, where the contractors created prototypes of their solutions, the iProcureSecurity PCP project advances into Phase II –Development and Testing of Pilot Systems. Two contractors out of the four from the previous phase have been selected to further develop their prototypes for real-life piloting across the five Public Buyers’ countries – Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Austria. Phase III started in October 2023 and ends in October 2024.

Completion of Phase II

In Phase II, we embarked on an exciting journey of development and discovery. The four contractors created and presented their prototypes, engaging in two critical iterations:

v1: The first iteration focused on crafting non-functional or partially functional prototypes, which allowed us to gain insights for the solution refinement in the second iteration.

v2: This vital testing phase, conducted in person across all five public buyers’ countries, involved presenting advanced prototypes to a panel of experts and gathering their valuable feedback. The locations and dates for each v2 demonstration are displayed below.

Completion of Phase II

In Phase II, we embarked on an exciting journey of development and discovery. The four contractors created and presented their prototypes, engaging in two critical iterations:

v1: The first iteration focused on crafting non-functional or partially functional prototypes, which allowed us to gain insights for the solution refinement in the second iteration.

About the Phase III

In Phase III of the project the selected contractors will further advance their prototypes to a state where they can be piloted under real-life conditions, involving patients, EMTs, and health professional. In each country, the public buyers will select specific scenarios for testing the solutions.

The pilot activities are carefully structured into four essential elements. All the elements are set up in order to enable interaction between public buyers and contractors, and thus to facilitate the exchange of information and the integration of potential existing systems:

Pilot Preparation

Pilot Preparation during the pre-pilot part involves two key events:

Equipment Setup and Solution Introduction: In each country, the public buyers allocate two consecutive days for the contractors to install equipment and establish local supplier connections while providing initial system training.
Second On-Site Check-Up and Training: Following initial setup, the public buyers choose two consecutive days in each country for the contractors to conduct further training and update equipment based on initial feedback, ensuring system readiness for pilot operations.

Pilot Operation

Pilot Operation comprises two key events. Each event is allocated two days in each country:

Third On-Site Check-Up and Training: This involves critical check-ups and comprehensive training based on previous feedback. The equipment receives updates as needed.
Pilot Operation: The heart of the pilot phase, this stage demands the operation of all systems at each site, maintaining their quality and functionality. Led by the pilot site management organisation and supported by core team staff, this two-day event per country ensures that the systems operate at their best.

Pilot Analysis

Throughout Phase III ongoing analysis gathers feedback from participants, concluding after the Pilot Operations have ended, which will serve as the foundation for the final report. It primarily focuses on evaluating results from the evaluation questionnaire and comparing them to the DoA KPIs. This analysis is central to Phase III, offering conclusive insights on solution applicability and usability for public buyers.

Helpdesk Support

The continuous Helpdesk Support spanning all stages, will aid contractors and public buyers. It is a dedicated help service that ensures quick issue resolution and maintains site efficiency. The progress is monitored through bi-monthly status calls and a dedicated hotline for seamless communication between public buyers and contractors.

About the two awarded bids

Below are the abstracts of the solutions, that will further develop their prototypes to be piloted under real-life conditions in Phase III:

i-TRIER: I-TRIER brings as a legacy one of the very first fully digitised Triage Solutions, widely adopted Crisis Management System and Computer Aided Dispatch systems, and a unique toolkit of Hospital Management Systems providing interoperability solutions for unifying Emergency and Victim Tracking data domains with the health-data related ones. i-TRIER also brings to the forefront the citizens through the management of their PHR and by securely providing access to it by EMS. A modular, open, interoperable yet strongly integrated solution will be provided, through advancements in existing functionalities both in hardware and software components. i-TRIER will establish a flexible interoperability framework through an efficient streaming mechanism and local exchange of information. Towards the design and testing of the i-TRIER solution, the technology providers will be supported by experts throughout its development stages, ensuring that KPIs related to the MCI response will be improved.

ENSURE: The ENSURE system aims at strengthening the response of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Responders (EMR) to Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs). The latter are called to operate under stressful and uncertain environments, given that MCIs are usually evolved in complex and confusing situations. In the first phase of the project, the consortium is designing a novel digital triage system by utilising the unique expertise of Satways, Traqbeat and Incision. By leveraging hands-on experts’ experience in emergency medicine (Incisio), the project will combine medical wearables (Traqbeat) with an emergency management system (Satways) into a novel digital triage system for MCIs. In a disaster event, the system will enable the quick prioritisation of those who need high medical attention by automatically recognising and continuously monitoring their vital signs via an attachable patch from the disaster location to the hospital.

ONCODIR: Pioneering evidence-based cancer prevention project is launched

Marking a significant milestone in the domain of cancer prevention, the ONCODIR project has officially commenced. This transformative initiative is funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe programme. Over 42 months, starting in June 2023, ONCODIR is poised to revolutionise cancer prevention, seeking to deliver evidence-based cancer prevention strategies and AI-driven personalised prevention through multidisciplinary research.

In a significant step towards advancing cancer prevention, the project ONCODIR – Evidence-based Participatory Decision Making for Cancer Prevention through implementation research has officially launched. This transformative endeavour is funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe programme, specifically the call Research and Innovation actions supporting the implementation of the Mission on Cancer (HORIZON-MISS-2022-CANCER-01). Over 42 months, starting in June 2023, ONCODIR will leverage on multidisciplinary research methods to promote innovative approaches to cancer prevention, spanning from health policy analytics and social and behavioural sciences to AI-powered multi-omics, retrospective data analytics, and decision support theories. Ultimately, the project aims to provide evidence-based cancer prevention strategies and AI-powered personalised prevention.

These are ONCODIR’s specific objectives:

Identify and remove barriers to equal access to cancer prevention for all in the EU.
Create a flexible framework for improving existing colorectal cancer prevention programs, focusing on both structural and behavioural interventions.
Engage healthcare professionals, patients, policymakers, and stakeholders in co-designing and co-creating colorectal cancer prevention interventions, prioritizing gender considerations and ethics.
Offer reliable recommendations to citizens, clinicians, and regional-national policymakers for colorectal cancer prevention, with a focus on behaviour change among different risk groups.
Foster the adoption of ONCODIR’s results and solutions in cancer prevention by developing sustainable pathways for integrating cost-effective interventions into healthcare strategies across the EU.
Involve citizens in designing colorectal cancer prevention strategies and solutions through a participatory approach to boost awareness, acceptance, and innovation from the grassroots.

These ambitious objectives will be pursued through a joint effort of a consortium of 27 partners from multiple European countries, with the Information Technologies Institute at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (Greece) serving as the project coordinator. The consortium include these other partners: INCLIVA Biomedical Research Institute (Spain), European Cancer Patient Coalition (Belgium), European Society of Digestive Oncology (Austria), Youth Cancer Europe (Romania), European Regional and Local Health Authorities (Belgium), Ministry of Health (Greece), Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania, European Forum for Primary Care (Netherlands), Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia (Greece), Strategic Regional Agency for Health and Social Care (Italy), Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (Greece), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Institutul Oncologic Prof. Dr. Alexandru Trestioreanu Bucuresti (Romania), EXUS Software (Greece), Universidad de La Rioja (Spain), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Innovation Sprint (Belgium), Catalink (Cyprus), Unisystems (Luxembourg), Nutrinomics (Belgium), EY Advisory (Italy), Beia Consult International (Romania), DBC Europe (Greece), Institut Catala D’Oncologia (Spain), Lithuanian Cancer Patient Coalition, and SYNYO (Austria).

Overall, ONCODIR has allocated 1052 person-months among all partners for its implementation, divided into seven work packages. The project’s structure comprises three distinct phases: 1) the development of ONCODIR architecture, including technical work package development and proof-of-concept prototypes; 2) the development of innovative technologies following specific data collection methods; and 3) cloud-based platform validation through its development cycles and feedback.

SYNYO’s primary role in this project is to lead the dissemination, exploitation, and communication strategy and implementation. This entails two key aspects of the project: one focuses on spreading awareness and engaging stakeholders, while the other concentrates on preparing for the market adaptation of project outcomes. The first aspect encompasses activities like branding, maintaining an online presence, analysing stakeholder interests, and crafting tailored messages. It also includes participating in external events and continuous monitoring. In the second aspect, efforts will be directed towards identifying exploitable assets, managing intellectual property rights, and creating a joint strategy for exploiting project results. Both aspects are vital components of the project and involve the active participation of all partners to ensure successful project outcomes.

As ONCODIR takes its initial steps into the world of cancer prevention, it aspires to be a game-changer. The project’s commitment to evidence-based decision-making and its multifaceted approach is set to transform the landscape of cancer prevention across Europe. Partners are committed to promoting the bioeconomy concept and will co-create and co-deliver the programme. BioBeo addresses social issues such as gender bias, disadvantaged youth groups, migrants and members of society with additional needs.

LEAGUE: Further progress after the project’s summer break in August

The next major steps in the LEAGUE project are the organisation of international and national trainings as well as the further development of technical tools, such as the chatbot and the Internet platform. In order to achieve these short-term goals, significant measures have been taken that can be seen as the result of increased cooperation between all project partners.

This section provides a precise overview of the most recent project activities. These include:

Dissemination and evaluation of questionnaires: For the improvement of the project’s technical tools and their adaption to the needs of the respective target groups, questionnaires have been handed out to boys between 10 and 18 years old. These actions were taken in all countries, where the project partners operate, meaning that SYNYO was also involved.
External evaluator: The LEAGUE consortium is supported by an external evaluator, who reviews the project performance and progress regularly. In July, shortly before the project’s summer break, all partners had to compose a summary of their results and achievements obtained within the first six months. In the monthly consortium meeting, which took place again in September, the feedback of the evaluator was overall positive.
Glossary: For the dissemination and social media activities, a LEAGUE glossary has been designed by one of the project partners. After the review and consent of all project partners, the glossary was sent to SYNYO, which is in charge of the project’s dissemination and exploitation campaigns. The glossary itself includes terms, which have an explanatory function and should bring the topic closer to the followers of LEAGUE’s social media channels. The glossary is designed for every target group.
Training material: For the organisation and conduction of the national and international training, adequate material is needed. This task was taken over by the responsible partner and disseminated to all consortium members for reviewing and commenting on it. The final comments that were incorporated will be redirected to SYNYO, for the further design of the layout and the insertion of relevant graphs.
National/international training: An approximate date was fixed for the first international training, which will be organised in Vienna and hosted by SYNYO. The next months will be dedicated to the distribution of information about the training over the project’s social media channels, the collection of relevant participants from various organisations in the whole of Europe and organisational tasks. Therefore, strengthened cooperation between all partners is a necessity. The national training, on the other hand, will be organised by every partner individually.

In January 2022, SYNYO successfully completed the Re-ACT project, in which it developed an online prevention hub for educators, civil society organisations and practitioners addressing antisemitism and antigypsyism online. In the project, SYNYO was able to combine its experience in web development and security related research, supported by the Re-ACT consortium, coordinated by the International network against cyber hate.

Project Re-ACT, which stands for Remember and ACT, has been successfully completed in January 2022, having started in February 2020, after a duration of exactly two years. The project received funding from the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (REC 2014 – 2020).

In Re-ACT, which has been coordinated by the International network against cyber hate, SYNYO also worked closely with the other project partners, namely the French International League against Racism and antisemitism and the Czech ROMEA; while the European Union of Jewish Students, the European Grassroots Organisations Network and CEJI- a Jewish contribution to an Inclusive Europe also played an important role and shared their knowledge and network with Re-ACT.

Re-ACT was initiated due to an analysis of hate-data collected by members of the international network against cyber-hate (a group of 29 European human rights CSOs), which highlighted strong links between current online hate-phenomena, with a particular focus on antisemitism and antigypsyism, and practices that have been propagated in the Third Reich.

To transform these worrisome findings into effective warnings, the project placed a specific focus on researching how “old” concepts of antisemitism and antigypsyism are being re-enacted by concerted hate campaigns and where they originated from. Starting from there, Re-ACT developed, collected and provided educational materials and tools for the prevention of racism, xenophobia, homophobia and other forms of intolerance.

Project results

Based on these self-generated sets of information plus a curated collection of high-quality educational materials SYNYO developed an online prevention hub.

To achieve this, SYNYO first carried out an in-depth need analysis to gather the wishes, needs and challenges faced by the potential end-user groups of the hub like educators or members of civil society organisations. The analysis identified a number of existing barriers, like a lack of best practices, for instance on how to counter antisemitism online, preventing practitioners to address hate speech and practices in a more effective manner.

In a next step and informed by the structured needs, challenges and wishes of the prevention-hub´s potential end-users, initial wireframes of the individual modules and the overall architecture of the prevention-hub were established by SYNYO. These were used to validate and refine the design of the prevention hub through discussions with potential end-users, like educators and members of civil society organisations, with whom an online workshop was organised by SYNYO, or during the INACH annual conference on the 15th of October 2020.

After integrating the so obtained feedback, the design of the prevention hub was finalised, laying the groundwork for the subsequent development of the prevention-hub by SYNYO.

As such, the final prevention hub consists of six main modules, namely the home module (landing page), a News & Knowledge section, the library module, a Stakeholder map, a Project Directory and the Consortium map. Each of the modules responds to a specific need of Re-ACT´s end-user groups, as identified at the beginning of the project [link to article NEW01005402EN Re-ACT 02], and have been jointly tested before the platform was made publicly available.

MIICT: Final conference on co-creating ICT solutions to aid migrant integration

The MIICT project presented the final project outputs at the conference titled “Co-creating ICT solutions to aid migrant integration: challenges, solutions and sustainability.” The panels focused on co-creation methods, evidence-based field research in Spain, Cyprus and Italy, the technological solutions developed by the MIICT consortium – such as the IMMERSE platform – and finally, the sustainability of project outputs.

As the MIICT project came to an end, the project outputs were presented at a final conference that attracted over 80 participants from academia, policy circles, and civil society. In six panels, the conference covered different steps that were necessary in the development of ICT solutions for migrant integration. Speakers included members of the MIICT consortium from the fields of computer science, social science, law and engineering, as well as partners from the NGO sector. Furthermore, guest speakers from the sister projects EasyRights, Welcome, and MICADO also provided their input in selected panels.

In order to provide a wide-ranging exchange with key stakeholders, the conference included presentations by IOM, the Spanish Red Cross, UNHCR Cyprus, the European Commission DG NEAR and the Court of Minors of Trento. This goes with the spirit of MIICT, which is based on the ambition to contribute to pressing policy debates on migrants’ integration in Europe.

Conference program

The conference featured six panels which are summarized below:

Panel 1 focused on the co-creation methodology applied in the MIICT project. Dr Karen Latricia Hough, Sheffield Hallam University, discussed how ICT solutions can provide efficient and effective integration when they are co-created by developers and end users. The panellists stressed that co-creative methods can have a transformative effect on participating migrants, but they also come with challenges: The presentations highlighted the knowledge gap that often exists between project and policy designers and field-based practitioners. Petya Peteva, Law and Internet Foundation, also addressed the legal and ethical considerations surrounding the development of ICT solutions for migrants’ integration in this panel.

Panel 2-4 were dedicated to field research in the piloting locations of the MIICT project: Italy, Spain and Cyprus. The discussions demonstrated the importance to customize ICT solutions based on local needs. Insights from the field by practitioners (Spanish Red Cross, UNHCR Cyprus, Court of Minors of Trento) highlighted the diverse challenges faced by migrants and refugees during their journey and when arriving in a host country. ICT providers need to take into consideration local hurdles to integration as well as the bureaucratic frameworks and distribution of responsibilities between governmental, and non-governmental organizations, as well as between different levels of government (municipalities, regional and national governments) when designing ICT tools.

In Panel 5, Dimos Ntioudis, CERTH, presented the technological solution developed in the MIICT project – the IMMERSE platform. In this session, the participants were also asked to provide further feedback on the platform, to assess its usability in different local contexts. Furthermore, the IMMERSE platform was compared to an AI-based technological solution which is currently being developed in the Welcome project.

The last panel, centred on the topic of impact and sustainability. Tuomas Tammilehto, Laurea University, discussed the topic of how to measure the societal impact of the MIICT project. Theoni Spathi, CERTH, presented the policy recommendations drafted by the MIICT consortium and the sister projects, which are aimed at influencing policy-making at the EU level.

Take aways

The conference provided an opportunity to get informed about the diverse outputs created in the lifetime of the MIICT project. The discussions during the event pointed to the continued need to support migrants’ integration in host countries by using ICT tools, and therefore, the ongoing relevance of the MIICT project outputs.

While participants from the NGO sector reiterated their interest in using the IMMERSE platform, important questions related to the administration, hosting and funding for maintenance and further development the platform were listed as potential hurdles in the uptake of digital solutions like IMMERSE.

Despite the end of the MIICT project, the consortium partners will remain in contact to develop a strategy for the roll out of the IMMERSE platform. A plan for uptake will be developed in cooperation with future administrators of the platform.

SMARAGD: Project to support therapists through aggregation and visualisation of health data ends

Electronic health data is generated every day by patients. Crucial to decide on further therapeutic treatment, the presentation of these data does not always meet the information needs of therapists. The SMARAGD project ends after 30 months of research with novel insights on the needs-based aggregation, analysis and visualisation of health data to support therapists in their daily work.

After 30 months, the FFG-funded research project SMARAGD: Smart Aggregation and Visualisation of Health Data has come to an end. Coordinated by the IMC Fachhochschule Krems, the interdisciplinary consortium consisting of SYNYO, Karl-Franzens University Graz, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Medical University Graz, Know-Center, and University of Vienna have implemented the ambitious project plan: to design components for a system to intelligently aggregate, analyse, and visualise health data to support occupational and physiotherapists in their everyday work.

From burden to support

Hospital information systems are practical and useful tools; however, they can be experienced as a burden. Searching for relevant information can be difficult and time-consuming, particularly if systems are not designed for a specific occupational group – such as therapists. SMARAGD focused on this often-neglected group, aiming to provide a solution that supports them in generating knowledge from a plethora of information, which is the basis for further therapeutic intervention. The success of SMARAGD was demonstrated by the great interest it generated in the health sector. Even more important, however, was the positive feedback provided by the therapists participating in the testing iterations, proving the relevance and importance of such a solution.

From information needs to a paper prototype

Following an interdisciplinary approach, the main focus at the beginning of the project was on the identification of information needs of occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Involving users from the very beginning, SMARAGD partners conducted telephone interviews, participant observation, and focus groups to understand what health data is relevant for therapists in their everyday work [link to NEW01004504EN]. Based on these results, exemplary components for an intelligent aggregation and visualisation of these data were developed and piloted in user tests. The legal and organisational implications of such a system were reflected on the basis of the Austrian legal situation and reflected upon in group discussions with experts.

Visualising health data for therapists

SYNYO’s main role in the SMARAGD project was to design visualisations of health data that support therapists. Based on the identified information needs, as well as the user requirements, SYNYO iteratively designed a user interface that allows therapists to easily and intuitively identify relevant information. This should allow therapists to save time – time which can be spent with the patient instead of searching for information.

The user interface was tested with the users – occupational and physiotherapists – in three iterations, continuously refining the visualisations based on the feedback, resulting in a final version as demonstrated below. The image shows an overview of the patient, providing the therapist with information about their diagnosis, the number of therapy sessions, as well as information about pain, capacities, and other relevant information. It also provides an overview of the whole patient in a body chart, thus allowing the therapist to see at a glance whether the patient is suffering from other injuries. This allows the therapist to get a quick overview of the patient’s status at first glance, before switching to a more detailed view.
