The project AAL+Healthcare had set the overall aim of the project to explore the novel usage scenarios, individual dataset structures. Relevant legal considerations and applicable business models for the distribution of AAL and healthcare data or services via the Data Market Austria. Based on literature review, best practices and the involvement of relevant stakeholders via surveys and consultation, this aim was successfully reached.

In order to expand the knowledge of the healthcare environment and develop a new framework for the Data Market Austria, the project AAL+Healthcare set the objective to identify and analyse various dataset structures and usage scenarios. Moreover, it set the objective to define legal considerations and recognize currently existing business models that may be applied to the Data Market Austria. This overall aim was broken down into five goals that were necessary to be fulfilled in order for the overall objective of the project to be achieved.

Goal 1

The first objective was to investigate appropriate knowledge, literature, best practices and approved business models, as well as data requirements. The tasks performed to meet this goal included the analysis of the state of the art which included existing studies, analyses, roadmaps, concepts, datasets and formats in the Austrian and European context of AAL and healthcare. This analysis built the scientific and technical foundation for the project.

The purpose behind collecting, aggregating and analysing literature and best practice material was to ultimately create systematic datasets based on the data requirements for the usage scenarios that were identified later on in the project.

Goal 2

The second goal focused on creating scenarios for ALL and healthcare data, in order to develop a conception of feasible usage scenarios of AAL and healthcare data by including relevant stakeholders and their individual data requirements. With the goal in mind both quantitative and qualitative empirical research, with the aim to take into account the whole range of stakeholders were performed to identify their requirements and needs. This approach was to make sure that the developed usage scenarios serve the interests of business, politics and research, but also include the perspective of primary stakeholders, such as end-users and care organisations, right from the start.

During this process two surveys were performed: First, a survey with data stakeholders (i.e. professionals and researchers involved in data analytics and data science) with the aim to identify user requirements from these stakeholders with different backgrounds. The second survey involved stakeholders active in the AAL environment, including primary stakeholders (older adults), secondary stakeholders (informal and professional caregivers) and tertiary stakeholders (comprised of private or public organisations that are not directly in contact with AAL products and services, but contribute in organising, paying or enabling them). The results were used to derive requirements and business models, which were transformed into personas and validated in qualitative interviews by our partners ASBW (Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Wien).

Goal 3

During the third stage of the process, potential data sources and sample data were identified based on the created usage scenarios, personas and business models. These included external sources such as OpenAIRE, OpenCorporates, European Data Portal, European Patent Organisation, and various other data sources. The third goal was to elaborate on datasets structures, legal validations and specification of licenses including with respect to data and datasets. After identifying such data sources, datasets and data samples, an approach for a systematic data aggregation system, an information extraction analysis system, information visualisation and data visualisation, and reporting system was defined and developed. Finally, the developed concepts, scenarios, as well as identified business models were condensed into a roadmap which needs to be developed over upcoming projects and research activities.

Goal 4

The fourth goal was related to the dissemination of the project and its outcomes via the Data Market Austria and further channels, including the provision of leaflets and content. The aim of this goal was to establish a network with relevant stakeholders from all areas and bring awareness to the project and its very interesting outcomes and results. During the project, project slide kits used for presentations and dissemination were created. Furthermore, the AAL+Healthcare project was presented at seven events, out of which three were set within the pan-European context. The project was able to gather feedback and input from various stakeholders with different backgrounds and perspectives.

Goal 5

Ultimately, the AAL+Healthcare Data project aimed to investigate new business models, show best practices, and, building on this knowledge, create a short-term and long-term exploitation strategy for all usage scenarios identified throughout the project. That is why the last goal in order to achieve the project’s main objectives was to create a short-term and long-term exploitation strategy for all usage scenarios identified throughout the project. Embedded in the roadmap created within the project, this exploitation strategy shows business models for different scenarios, including the necessary data requirements, service levels and legal considerations.

The entire findings and information collected during the project are relevant for the achievement of the individual goals of the partners involved in the project, but go also beyond that in offering highly important insights to the scientific community, the AAL and healthcare area and the data market in Austria.

Project impacts

As mentioned, the project was able to reach several goals and produce interesting information and resources out of these milestones:

• Creation of a dataset of appropriate knowledge, literature, best practices and approved business models in the field of AAL and Healthcare
• Development of stakeholder and business relevant usage scenarios
• Creation of a large collection of ALL and healthcare related data sets, data sources and data samples and their structures, legal validations and license format and specifications
• Drastically increased awareness of Data Market Austria, AAL, healthcare and the project results in the Austrian and European market.
• Development of a short-term and long-term exploitation strategy including business and service models and a roadmap

Therefore, it can be finally said that the project was able to achieve its main objective of identifying and analysing various dataset structures and usage scenarios to define legal considerations and recognize currently existing business models that may be applied to the Data Market Austria. Thus, it can be considered successful and it also led to several impacts listed below.
