Mobility and transport together a key topic for society and economy in today’s world. Mobility is a fundamental need in modern society because it represents a prerequisite for economic success, social prosperity, and general satisfaction of different stakeholders and groups in society. This includes the transportation of people and goods, public transport and sustainable mobility plans. Thus, mobility facilitates growth, employment and sustainable development in all over Europe.
The access to mobility in the future requires sustainable and interdisciplinary strategies which neither interfere with the general welfare of today’s society nor threaten the foundations of future generations. Urban mobility accounts for 40 % of all CO2 emissions of road transport and up to 70 % of other pollutants from transport.
The dynamic development of traffic and increasing number of travels is a challenge for urban areas, especially in regard to the growth of automobile traffic, the increasing tendency of travelling ever greater distances, the global networking of business relationships, and demographic change – poses an enormous scientific and technical challenge for suppliers, local authorities and decision makers. European cities increasingly face problems caused by transport and traffic. The question of how to enhance mobility while at the same time reducing congestion, accidents and pollution is a common challenge to all major cities in Europe.
Solving the mobility challenge requires holistic and ambitious coordinated actions from the private and public sectors. Technological advances and commercialization, funding, intelligent policies, interdisciplinary approaches and business-model innovation is necessary to realize productivity improvements while creating more sustainable environments and transport systems in our cities. One promising approach is the movement toward new “multimodal” services which comprise all modes of transportation for journeys by combining walking, cars, buses, bikes, and trains—as well as shared transportation services.
To achieve the greatest possible impact of research outcomes and product innovations, SYNYO prioritizes actions which take a systemic approach to promote a more resource efficient, greener and competitive transport and mobility system and related services as a key part of smart, inclusive and sustainable growth.
