eMAPs: DeVines solution to revolutionize efficiency and precision in vineyard management

With DeVines, the eMAPs project has developed an innovative solution which will offer a gain in efficiency and precision to manage vineyards with ease. The solution is based on the highly-accurate eMAPs GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite) receiver. It has been tested on vineyards in France and offers wine professionals the opportunity to integrate technology into the heart of their management.

Higher accuracy and availability of GNSS – receivers (Global Navigation Satellite System receivers) are key, to enhancing current navigation systems. Tackling this need for innovative new technologies, the eMAPs project has developed an enhanced GNSS receiver, which is using Galileo satellite data to develop a platform for various solutions in smart mobility and fleet management.

Challenges in modern viticulture

Based on the eMAPs GNSS receiver, the DeVines solution gives wine professionals the opportunity to integrate technology into the heart of their management. The main mission of DeVines is, on the one hand, to provide data relating to the growth of the vines and to map the anomalies present in the plots. This service also makes it possible to optimize the management of the operation by allowing communication between employees and managers.

DeVines helps to solve several challenges within everyday winemaking: On the one hand, several managerial challenges will be met. The human eye can be very efficient at detecting anomalies in vineyards, however, recording, locating and treating them remain one of the biggest challenges for winegrowers this day. The solution will help keep an overview of these challenges.

On the other hand, economic challenges will be met. In order to save time, the monitoring of grape maturity in vineyards is assessed randomly and only partially. Because of multiple disparities in the vineyard, this method is imprecise. A total evolution and monitoring over time would be incompatible from an economic point of view – DeVines offers an effective solution to these challenges.

Finally, DeVines helps to meet current and pressing environmental challenges. Global warming has had a profound impact on viticulture and will continue to do so in the future. Water shortages, evolving diseases and unfavourable temperatures are some of the problems emerging from climate change and, ultimately, this endangers the health and quality of the grapes. DeVines will provide data and analytics, to help use available resources effectively.

Advantages of the DeVines solution

A continuous tracking of the growth of the vineyard´s grapes and the detection of vineyard anomalies will help to establish a leaner vineyard management system. Qualitative and quantitative data will be continuously gathered from multiple sources and sensors, helping to track a variety of KPIs such as the number of grapes per plant, the grapes and plants’ growth, the leaf density and missing plants. The smartphone application provides an interface for real-time communication between managers, employees and contractors across the vineyard. The application allows users to manually record the geolocation of any anomalies they observe. Flagged anomalies are then pictured, timestamped and geotagged, so that managers can visualize them in a matter of seconds.

Eventually, the DeVines solution helps vineyard owners to better plan their day (by allocating tasks to employees on a regular basis), to monitor all activities in the vineyard and to analyse all ongoing developments in the vineyard. Further advancements will be made to it, as currently it is being tested by vineyard owners and will then be made available to all interested customers.

Over the last couple of months, eMAPs has developed a highly-accurate GNSS receiver (Global Navigation
Satellite receiver), which will enhance the current state of the art of similar models on the market. The solution
has now been demonstrated for its use in enhancing wine growing practices to meet economic, environmental
and vineyard maintenance challenges – and therefore merges viticulture with technology.

As of today, the world of viticulture faces many problems related to the growth of wines, the environment, and
the management of remote resources. These issues can accumulate and potentially slow down production as a
whole when left unaddressed. Typical challenges are (i) economical, linked to operating performance, (ii)
environmental, linked to climate change as well as (iii) are related to vineyards maintenance challenges, due to
remote employee management.

GNSS receiver to meet challenges of vineyard owners

The eMAPs project has developed a GNSS receiver, which can be used to meet all of these challenges. The
presented solution for vineyard owners is called DeVines and can help winegrowers to accurately monitor the
growth of their grapes in the parcels, while also enhancing human resource management, productivity and
communication through the DeVines mobile application.
The fusion of tradition and precision viticulture takes place using a novel eHermes receiver, together with the
DeVines mobile application, a database as link between the receiver and mobile application as well as the Galileo
& GPS satellites, which are used to geolocate the eHermes receivers. The receivers can be retrofitted on any type
of tractors and are mapping the vineyard thanks to its seven cameras. Based on the collected data, the DeVines
mobile application is creating High-Definition maps which are made available through the application to allow
users to precisely geolocate anomalies.

The eMAPs project is transforming urban mobility and agriculture with GNSS solutions powered by Galileo data. Offering 30cm accuracy, it supports smart navigation, public transport management, precision viticulture, and infrastructure monitoring, delivering essential tools to advance smarter cities and sustainable practices.

The eMAPs project has spearheaded the development of cutting-edge GNSS-based solutions addressing diverse sectors, including agriculture and urban mobility. For this purpose, an innovative, low-cost, and high-performance GNSS receiver was developed, leveraging Galileo data to address current challenges in these sectors. GaliGo, a mobility solution under eMAPs, focuses on smart city transportation by providing sustainable and efficient travel options. The solution integrates multi-frequency GNSS, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and cameras to deliver 30cm positioning accuracy and high-definition urban maps. Targeted applications include smart navigation for connected cars, real-time fleet management for public transport, and infrastructure monitoring for urban planners. Coordinated by 3D Aerospace SASU, the project involved the partners SYNYO, École nationale de l’aviation civile, and Université Gustave Eiffel, focusing on scalability, real-time map updates, and precision, benefiting travellers, transport operators, and urban authorities. Key aspects and achievements of eMAPs for the mobility sector included:

Targeted Applications: Smart navigation for connected cars, real-time fleet management for public transport operators as well as infrastructure monitoring for urban planners.
Innovative Features: A low-cost, cloud-based platform combining GNSS, IMUs, and cameras, offering cm-level accuracy, scalability, and near real-time updates.
Prototype testing: Test vehicles equipped with a reference trajectory system validated the receiver’s performance.
Collaboration and Impact: Benefits extend to travellers, transport operators, and urban authorities by enhancing precision and usability.

Similarly, eMaps developed GNSS-based tools to support the agricultural sector. DeVines, a technological solution for smart viticulture, integrates the high-tech GNSS receiver eHermes with big data analytics and 3D mapping to enhance vineyard management. This system provides real-time decimetric positioning, continuous grape growth monitoring, and rapid anomaly detection while streamlining management processes. It tracks performance indicators like grape count per plant and leaf density and features a smartphone app for geolocating and reporting vineyard issues.

In the scope of this 24-month project, the consortium achieved vital progress and realized a low-cost, cloud-based mass-market platform, which hybridizes data generated by a multi- frequency GNSS receiver, demonstrating the versatility and impact of GNSS technology to bring important innovations to diverse sectors.

eMAPs: Shaping the future of Smart Mobility with GaliGo

With GaliGo, the eMAPs project has started its brand-new smart city solution. GaliGo will tackle multiple modern-day problems in mobility, such as slow traffic updates, undetected road anomalies and mass traffic congestion. Based on the eMAPs platform, it will combine 3D city mapping, high-accuracy geolocation and smart city solutions to ease more sustainable and efficient travelling urban communities.

Tackling this need for innovative new technologies, the eMAPs project has developed an enhanced GNSS receiver, which is using Galileo satellite data to develop a platform for various solutions in smart mobility and fleet management.

Modern-Day problems in urban mobility

With GaliGo, the eMAPs project has started one of its solutions for smart cities to ease more sustainable and efficient travelling urban communities. GaliGo is tackling multiple challenges which are part of day-to-day traffic. One of the main challenges is traffic congestion, which oftentimes is poorly anticipated and communicated. As it stands today, by the time traffic congestion is detected and communicated to road users, the situation has already worsened. Moreover, Roadworks, accidents, and deviations happen to be a part of daily urban mobility. While they may sometimes be inevitable, we should certainly strive to manage them by being more reactive, efficient and communicative. Not at least, deliveries of, mostly online – ordered goods and products oftentimes still are inefficient and fail to provide the service we need.

GaliGo as in-class solution for various needs

GaliGo is offering a solution to counter all of these problems with its GNSS-based solution. It is offering real-time traffic updates as an in-class solution to travel faster and safer for the benefits of the overall community. By using the latest geolocation technology and complex image recognition algorithms, GaliGo automatically detects and locates road anomalies such as holes in the road, accidents and roadwork. It, as well, provides a solution to counter troubles with missing deliveries due to unpunctual carriers or impractical schedules and provides its users well in advance with information on when they can expect their online orders to be delivered and helps to follow them accurately and in real-time throughout the entire delivery process.

Based on 3D city maps, GaliGo builds out a wide range of mobility optimization services in order to turn urban mobility into a much more fluid process, ultimately resulting in an overall significantly improved infrastructure in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Further down the line, GaliGo will leverage its technology, knowledge, and data to take urban infrastructure to a whole new level, enabling autonomous driving solutions as well as smart and more sustainable food sourcing solutions.

The specific added-value of the GaliGo smartphone application lies in the ability to provide real-time connected transport, real-time navigation on the road, real-time navigation from home and last-mile matching. A database will be powered by the receiver data and will be connected to a specific database, which will be powered by the receiver data. The, therewith achieved, dynamic optimisation of urban navigation will help to decrease urban congestion and equip public transport with a multitude of information, which will be visualized in a real-time HD urban map.

Further use-case on wineyard management will be developed

The eMAPs project will develop further use-cases of its platform. One of them will be DeVines, which is focusing on the use of the eHermes receiver in the field of winegrowing (viticulture). The fusion of tradition and precision viticulture will be one major outcome of the eMAPs project and will enhance human resource management, productivity and communication within the vineyard.

eMAPs: New use case on smart urban mobility to reduce carbon footprint

eMAPs has developed a highly-accurate GNSS receiver (Global navigation satellite receiver) to enhance the current state-of-the-art of similar models on the market. With GaliGo, it is demonstrating it´s potential in the field of smart urban mobility, supporting urban authorities, carrier customers, carriers as well as transporters. Among other benefits, the solution will help to reduce congestion, safety as well as customer satisfaction.

The eMAPs consortium has developed a disruptive Localisation Based Service (LBS) in its Galileo-based project, to tackle the foreseen and expected smart city and autonomous car challenges. The hardware and software developments of the project aim at providing future solutions such as smart navigation for connected car users, real time fleet management for city public transport and infrastructure maintenance monitoring for city planners. By developing an innovative, low-cost, compact, high performance receiver, eMAPs provides a targeted 30cm vehicle’s position accuracy and high-definition urban maps which will benefit to all smart cities’ stakeholder groups: the travellers, the public transport operators and the urban authorities.

GaliGo: An enabler of smart mobility in urban cities

With GaliGo, a first use case has now been defined for the use of the receiver. GaliGo aims to answer the question on how to enable smart mobility in urban cities while reducing carbon footprint. The smartphone application will be connected to the receiver and offers real-time navigation, geotagged information, connected maps as well as will serve as a main interface with customers with customized application and an online assessment. Urban authorities will therewith be enabled to reduce congestion, improve road safety as well as air quality in their cities.

Further use cases will be presented

Besides GaliGo, further use-cases will be developed and described in detail within the eMAPs project. eMAPs: Project towards a new satellite navigation device for smart and accurate mobility

Higher accuracy and availability of GNSS – receivers (Global Navigation Satellite System receivers) are key, to enhance current navigation systems. The change of cities´ architecture makes the usage of GNSS signals challenging due to the inaccuracy introduced by multipath phenomena (one of the most common errors in GNSS receivers, caused by reflection from nearby obstacles). The eMAPs project will address these current shortcomings and aims to develop a novel, highly-accurate GNSS receiver for the mass-market.

Background

According to a United Nations’ report, World Urbanization Prospects, the number of cities with at least one million inhabitants is forecasted to increase from 512 cities worldwide in 2016 to 662 cities in 2030 (a 29% increase). As the global urban population is growing steady, it brings a number of challenges that cities will have to face such as traffic management, infrastructure maintenance and air quality monitoring.

Alongside with the development of denser cities, the demands by GNSS end users for higher accuracy, availability, robustness and integrity are continuously increasing. These GNSS receivers are essential devices for geographical positioning, and – in combination with suitable software – are key for enhanced routing and navigation. Most of the platforms used in TomTom cars as well as by Google or HERE are built up by the addition of the different sensor elements (GNSS antenna, IMU block, LiDAR and cameras). This straightforward integration method makes these devices heavy, very expensive, bulky and environmentally unfriendly (due to significant drag coefficient). Hence, these are not mass-market compatible.

The eMAPs project

eMAPs will develop an enhanced GNSS receiver, based on a disruptive Localisation Based Service (LBS) using Galileo data, to tackle the foreseen and expected smart city and autonomous car challenges. The hardware and software developments of eMAPs aim at providing future solutions such as smart navigation for connected car users, real time fleet management for city public transport and infrastructure maintenance monitoring for city planners. By developing an innovative, low-cost, compact, high performance premium receiver, eMAPs will provide a targeted 30cm vehicle’s position accuracy and high-definition urban maps which will benefit to all smart cities’ stakeholder groups: the travellers, the public transport operators and the urban authorities. Specifically, eMAPs will:

Provide future solutions such as smart navigation for connected car users, fleet management for city public transport as well as maintenance monitoring for city planners
Develop a low-cost, cloud-based multi-sensor premium mass market platform which will hybridize data generated by a multi-frequency multi-constellation GNSS receiver, an IMU and cameras
Test the developed prototype, using test vehicles equipped with a reference trajectory system to obtain exact positioning with cm-level accuracy
Enhance scalability, near real time map updates and higher accuracy to new users, which cannot be met by the current business model

Under the coordination of the French company 3D Aerospace SASU, the partners SYNYO, École nationale de l’aviation civile and Université Gustave Eiffel, the consortium will work together in this 24-month project towards the realization of its low-cost, cloud-based mass-market platform, which will hybridize data generated by a multi-frequency GNSS receiver.
